This is a very proactive approach that received great participation by our service crews, who enjoyed the hands-on experience. This is just one of the many ways that INTREN puts safety first.

The Green Hard Hat program is just one of the initiatives implemented by our Occupational Health & Safety department to ensure the safety of all our crewmembers. This program identifies new workers and communicates their status to employees and subcontractors. INTREN's experienced and dedicated employees also mentor them until they graduate.

It is a common misconception that line of fire is just associated with overhead work, but it is essential for underground work, as well. At INTREN we utilize 3-part communication to make sure everyone knows when items are coming in and out of the manhole, as well as situational awareness which makes everyone aware when employees are working under the drop zone.

The Invite-Only Event Gathers Energy's Most Influential Women

Intren CEO Kelly TomblinINTREN is excited to announce that CEO Kelly Tomblin is the Keynote Speaker at the Women's Energy Summit being held on Wednesday, August 21 in Chicago. The 200 participants include regulators, industry leaders, political officials, and consumer groups.

Kelly is also participating as a panelist during the Rising Star Forum program on "What It Takes: The Unvarnished Truth"; an honest look on what it takes to get to the top and excel in today's complex and competitive business environment.

Since its inception in 2014, WES has served as a platform for senior women leaders to discuss pertinent energy issues, including how to 'move the needle forward' and advance women in this industry. 

Sarah Douglas of Intren and L2CMSINTREN is proud to announce that Operations Director Sarah Douglas will be recognized as a “Rising Star" at the Women's Energy Summit's Rising Star Forum; an award that highlights up-and-coming women in the energy sector.

Sarah will be honored, along with 24 other women, in Chicago today, August 20, at the Forum. The event is an exclusive and intimate event with bright, energetic, and trailblazing women in the energy industry. A distinguished group of nearly 100 women have been recognized as Rising Stars since 2015.

Sarah is the Operations Director for the Construction Management Services division and leads a team of 43 employees.

811 LogoWith Aug. 11 almost here, INTREN hopes this date on the calendar, 8/11, will serve as a natural reminder for residents to call 811 prior to any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. Every few minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811.

When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected their local one call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, spray paint or both.

Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree and laying a patio are all examples of digging projects that need a call to 811 before starting.

“On Aug. 11 and throughout the year, we remind homeowners and professional contractors alike to call 811 before digging to reduce the risk of striking an underground utility line,” said Tyler Herdendorf, Occupational Health & Safety Director for INTREN. “It really is the only way to know which utilities are buried in your area.”

The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces. Utility lines need to be properly marked because even when digging only a few inches or digging in a location that’s previously been marked, the risk of striking an underground utility line still exists.

To kick off the month of August, INTREN helped celebrate the fifth anniversary of ComEd’s one-of-a-kind Energy Force program. Energy Force is the country’s first energy-efficiency education program designed for and taught by people with disabilities. Loretta Rosenmayer, CEO and founder of INTREN, attended this celebration that highlighted the dedicated individuals who make up the team and their efforts in helping others be more energy efficient.

ComEd launched this program five years ago and to this day, it is the first and only program organized by a U.S. utility company designed to specifically help empower individuals with developmental disabilities. The program focuses on teaching people how to reduce their electricity and save money as well as how to educate others to do the same.

Driven by core values of employee empowerment and a focus on sustainability, INTREN is proud to support ComEd’s Energy Force program and work towards a more energy efficient world. 

On Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016, INTREN participated in the 2016 Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Funds 15th Annual Golf Classic & Silent Auction! INTREN employees out of the New Berlin, Wisconsin office participated in this event.

The Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund (KWW/CF) is a statewide non-profit charitable effort that steps in and keeps the heat and power on for thousands of elderly, people with disabilities, veterans and working families with young children in crisis. As a result of generous public, private, business and individual support, KWW/CF provides preventative services and the financial assistance necessary to avert energy-related crisis situations.

The Golf Classic & Silent Auction helps around 2,500 people annually including veterans, elderly, disabled and working families with young children keep the heat and power on in their homes thanks to the participation and generosity of companies like INTREN! As an industry leader in stewardship, INTREN is proud to help support our local communities.

INTREN recently attended the 14th Annual Swing for Kids' Sake Golfing Outing in Boulder Ridge to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. The day was filled with auctions, contests, golf and very hot weather!

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Through this program, volunteers have the opportunity to mentor children in communities across the country. Through this mentorship, positive relationships are developed between the mentors (“Bigs”) and the children (“Littles”) that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters truly believes that every child has the potential to achieve success in life. INTREN wholeheartedly supports Big Brothers Big Sisters and is proud to have our very own INTREN “Bigs!”

On Monday, July 18th, a number of INTREN employees swung their clubs for the 5th Annual Raue Center for the Arts' President's Golf Classic! This year's golf outing took place at the Bull Valley Golf Club in Woodstock, Illinois. The fundraiser provided great memories, countless laughs, and supported the Raue Center's largest fundraising initiative.

Raue Center for the Arts is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of all through the arts and 100% of their proceeds benefit the Rau Center's youth programs. These programs include Mission Imagination and Sage Studio, which serves 25,000 of the area's youth each year. The historical theater has been holding impressive shows and events dating all the way back to 1929.

One of the many people who work behind the scenes to ensure the Raue Center's success is INTREN's very own Matthew Turk, Executive Vice President of Operations & Business Development, who serves on the Raue Center's Advisory Council. As a longtime supporter of the Raue Center for the Arts, Matthew Turk was surprised when presented by Richard Kuranda, Raue Center Executive Director, with an award winning painting of the Raue Center thanking him for all of his support and dedication.

 

Perfect for summertime, INTREN recently sponsored an Adirondack chair for the Marengo-Union Chamber of Commerce's 2016 Summer Art Exhibit & Auction. The Chamber is holding this auction to help raise money for the Marengo-Union community, and as a local company, INTREN is doing our part to support them.

The amazing local artist Peggy Gannon created this one-of-a-kind artwork for INTREN. Her work is dedicated to turning simple places into something beautiful and this is exactly what she did for the Adirondack chair!

The chair will soon be placed in Marengo or Union for the viewing along with other local businesses' Adirondack chairs. Make sure you check out this great piece of art, as well as all the other chairs for the Chamber's auction!

Engineering News-Record (ENR) has named INTREN ENR Midwest’s Specialty Contractor of the Year. Announced July 31st, 2015, INTREN was selected for the award by the regional magazine for their revenue growth, outstanding work within the industry and charitable contributions.

“After years of incremental growth, [INTREN] nearly doubled its revenues between 2011 and 2014. Last year, revenues soared by 25%, another breakthrough for the firm,” said John Gregerson, the editor of ENR Midwest. “[INTREN’s] growth has come as a result of several key alliances and initiatives, as well as a culture that promotes training and development… For those and many other reasons, ENR’s network of regional editors has named INTREN ENR Midwest’s Specialty Contractor of the Year.”

ENR Midwest’s regional editors’ final decision was based on INTREN’s work on ComEd’s Smart Grid Program, their 24/7 Emergency Storm Response and Restoration initiatives, and involvement in the Peoples Gas Modernization Project.   It noted in their consideration, INTREN’s involvement in the CONSTRUCT program which helps provide training to minorities interested in obtaining careers in the construction industry, their involvement in the formation of their own POWER Group (Promoting Of Women in Energy Roles), as well as their support over the years of numerous local and nationwide charities.

“Being selected as the recipient for this award starts from the ground up. This honorable distinction within our industry begins with the men and women in the field and offices whose hard work and determination everyday sets INTREN apart,” said Lance Rosenmayer, INTREN’s President. “INTREN is extremely proud to be named ENR Midwest’s Specialty Contractor of the Year and looks forward to continuing to lead by example within the utility industry.”

Culture is a fundamental attribute to INTREN’s daily structure and success. It is no surprise that our employees exhibit the “OutPerforming Everyday” energy that pumps through the walls of our INTREN offices. Our very own Tim Ayers, Director of Safety & Quality, wrote an article demonstrating his stance on culture and how our company’s strong culture is often impressive to others in the Tree Care Industry Magazine. Tim explains how while everyone one may come with their own sense of culture, those who are truly success are the ones who can not only adapt to our culture, but adopt it as their own.

making history awardsOn June 3rd, Loretta attended the Chicago Historical Society’s 21st Annual “Making History Awards” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago.  Of all the events Loretta goes to, this consistently stands out as one of her favorites, partly due to the profound and compassionate individuals that surround the event every year. This year, five distinguished leaders with deep ties in their communities were honored for their accomplishments.

Of the five award winners, one really stuck out in Loretta’s mind. Fritzie Fritzshall, a holocaust survivor, received “The Bertha Honoré Palmer Making History Award” for distinction in Civic Leadership.  Fritzshall, along with other survivors, worked to found the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center located in Skokie, IL. While most acceptance speeches thank those who supported them along the way, Fritzshall’s was vastly different. She thanked the man who saved her life many years ago when she arrived at Auschwitz at 13 years old.

In her speech, she explained a horrifying anecdote about when she was taken to Auschwitz. As her train pulled up, a prisoner came aboard to pick out the strong to go to labor. He came up to her and said “Say you are 15, you hear me? Say you are 15.” As she was ushered off the train, she did as the man said and reported her age as 15. While she was directed to one line into the camp, she watched as her mother and brothers were taken to the gas chamber. It was at that moment when Fritzshall realized that the man who whispered those fateful words into her ear had saved her life.

Fritzie Fritzall went on to talk about when she moved to Skokie, IL. While she thought she had escaped the dark times of her past, she was sadly mistaken. In the 1960’s, a group of Nazi’s chose to organize marches throughout Skokie, which had a large Jewish population. The audience was awed by Fritzshall’s message about her time at Auschwitz and having to view the very group that put her there march in the streets of Skokie.

Upon hearing Fritzshall’s story, Loretta recalled some of her own memories of those marches. Having worked at a Montessori school near Skokie, Loretta remembers the pain and hurt these demonstrations brought throughout the Jewish community.  While everyone was disgusted with this group’s audacity to march with such a hateful message, the police had to protect them. The first amendment gave them every right to peacefully march. To support their neighbors, many wore stickers of the Star of David, which Loretta still keeps to this day.
