Certified woman-owned businesses attended a Women's Business Development Center and WEC Corporate Partner event - Teaming for Contracts: Creating Collaborative Partnerships to Grow Your Business exclusively for established businesses. Wisconsin businesses interested in leveraging their certification with major corporations and government agencies to access contract opportunities were offered the opportunity to learn about forming profitable partnerships to grow their business at this event.

Presenting at the meeting and sharing their story on how they joined forces to improve their bottom line and to begin to change the face of construction were our very own Founder & CEO, Loretta Rosenmayer and Trice Construction President & CEO, Stephanie Hickman.

Hosted by Jerry Fulmer, Vice President - Supplier Diversity with WEC Energy Group, Jerry also provided valuable information about their supplier diversity program initiatives to the captive audience, which included INTREN Account Manager Brenda Gunnink. 

Another great day was spent with the kids at the John R. Tibbott Elementary School in Bolingbrook, Illinois on Tuesday, January 24th for INTREN’s 6th JA-In-A-Day.  Twenty-nine INTREN volunteers taught 19 different classes ranging from kindergarten to third grade, for a total of over 520 students, the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures, and make smart academic and economic choices. Junior Achievement's (JA) programs—in the core content areas of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy—ignite the spark in young people to experience and realize the opportunities and realities of work and life in the 21st century.

INTREN & Trice Construction Launch Partnership on Ameren Corporation’s Manhole Replacement Project

INTREN and Trice Construction, a Chicago-based minority contractor, have officially started work with Ameren Corporation to rebuild and upgrade manholes in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Trice Construction will serve as a subcontractor for INTREN for the first year of this multi-year blanket contract. INTREN will provide professional guidance and leadership throughout the year, assisting Trice Construction in their efforts to become a prime contractor.

Last year, INTREN received Ameren Corporation’s first “Corporate Partner of the Year” award for its efforts and leadership in mentoring second tier MWBE companies. This award recognizes companies for their efforts to proactively support, mentor and provide the necessary resources to minority diversified companies such as Trice Construction.

“It is an honor to work with a company such as INTREN and Trice Construction that are willing to lend a helping hand,” said INTREN’s St. Louis-based Account Manager, Steve Littrell. “All of us at INTREN take pride in our culture of stewardship and diversity mentorship program. It is a program like this that helps us stand out and grow diversity within the industry.”

As a result of the diversity mentorship program, INTREN has vetted over 70 suppliers and worked with 42, two of which achieved prime contractor status.

Last year, INTREN successfully mentored Trice Construction during a project in downtown Chicago, Illinois. With its civil construction workload increasing, INTREN introduced Trice Construction to Ameren Corporation to help the minority contractor achieve prime contractor status. Ameren Corporation serves approximately 2.4 million electric customers and 900,000 natural gas customers between Missouri and Illinois. 

Through its partnership with the Adopt-A-Well Program, INTREN and Haiti Outreach have successfully built a freshwater well in Kalili, Haiti. In August 2015, INTREN, its CEO and Founder, Loretta Rosenmayer, and almost 100 INTREN employees raised over $20,000 in support of Haiti Outreach.

Haiti Outreach is a non-profit organization that provides a hand-up not a hand-out, requiring community participation and responsibility on public projects that benefit the whole community. The INTREN-sponsored well will provide the rural mountain village with fresh water, replacing previously used surface water from rivers and streams.

INTREN President, Lance Rosenmayer, and Business Development Manager, Lloyd Gillespie, travelled to Haiti this January to attend the inauguration ceremony for the well’s opening.

“It was an unbelievable experience to witness,” said INTREN President, Lance Rosenmayer. “People spend a significant part of their day traveling for water or food. As a result, there is very little time for development of one’s self or the community. Haiti Outreach attracted us because of their belief in development vs. relief.  They don’t subscribe to giving to a community that doesn’t take ownership and maintain what is given to them.”

According to Haiti Outreach, 50 percent of the wells drilled in third world countries break down after one year in service due to lack of care. Through the non-profit’s development model of empowerment and accountability, its program has provided a 95 percent success rate after one year of a well’s completion.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has awarded INTREN a four year contract to replace deteriorated transmission and distribution poles in Sacramento and Placer County, California. The specialty utility contractor will replace approximately 750 transmission and distribution poles per year during the four year contract.

SMUD has serviced the Sacramento, and small adjoining portions of Placer and Yolo Counties in California, for more than 65 years. SMUD is the sixth largest community-owned electric service provider in the United States, servicing 624,770 residents and businesses.

“This project is a perfect fit for INTREN as we have been assisting SMUD’s neighboring utility with pole replacement work for the past three years,” said INTREN’s Regional Vice President of Operations, California, Jason Combs. “Over the past three years we have replaced upwards of 5,000 deteriorated poles in this area. Our office and crews are familiar with the geographic needs and regulations in California and was crucial to securing our first contract with SMUD.”

The SMUD project is an integral part of INTREN’s Strategic Initiatives. Securing this project was the first step in the company’s plan to diversify its customer base and regional business development.

The specialty contractor will service SMUD out of its Concord, California, office. INTREN has deployed field crews supported by an experienced back office team led by Jason Combs, Regional Vice President of Operations, California, Janice Vanerwegen, Regional Finance Supervisor, and John Olson, Regional Superintendent.  This team will oversee the account and continue to support our growth. 

INTREN has embarked on a five year blanket contract with PECO, formally known as Philadelphia Electric Company, to update the utility provider’s aging natural gas infrastructure. The specialty contractor will spend its first year of the five year contract replacing bare steel services in several Pennsylvania townships.

INTREN has a 28 year relationship with ComEd and the Exelon Corporation.  INTREN secured the contract with PECO, a subsidiary company of Exelon, in late 2015. Based in Philadelphia, PECO is the largest electric and natural gas utility in Pennsylvania, serving approximately 1.6 million electric customers and more than 500,000 natural gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania.

“INTREN’s culture of safety, quality and customer satisfaction were key in securing our first contract with PECO,” said INTREN President, Lance Rosenmayer. “Working with Miller Pipeline as a  subcontractor brings added value to the contract.”  Miller Pipeline has been hired on as a subcontractor by INTREN for the five year project.

In order to create a foothold on the East Coast, the Midwest specialty contractor has opened an office in Philadelphia to promptly address any of PECO’s needs. INTREN has staffed the back office and field crews working on the bare steel service project. Additional crews will join the project beginning in April, 2016.

INTREN has joined the Electrical Transmission & Distribution (ET&D) Partnership which works to reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and illnesses in the electrical line construction industry. The ET&D Partnership is a formal collaboration of 13 industry stakeholders and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Last month, INTREN entered into the ET&D Partnership at the partnership’s first steering committee meeting of 2016 in Coral Gables, Florida. Present for INTREN’s first meeting was Executive Vice President, Matthew Turk, and Director of Safety & Quality, Tim Ayers.

“Becoming a part of this partnership is a big step for our company,” said Turk. “Joining the ET&D Partnership provides INTREN with valuable regulatory and industry information being passed down by OSHA. We look forward to developing and implementing best practices for the betterment of the industry.”

The ET&D Partnership began in 2004 with six founding members. Since 2004, the partnership has increased to 13 members, covering an estimated 80 percent of total line workers in the construction industry. The goal of the partnership between OSHA and ET&D include: 1) data analysis to establish causes of fatalities, injuries and illnesses; 2) development and implementation of best practices; 3) development and delivery of training; and 4) communication to promote the importance and value of occupational safety and health.

For the sixth consecutive year, INTREN, a utility specialty contractor, joined the Junior Achievement (JA) of Will County to teach a Bolingbrook elementary school for an entire day. Thirty company volunteers made time to bring financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship skills to 427 area children at John R. Tibbott Elementary School in Bolingbrook, Illinois as part of Junior Achievement of Will County’s ‘JA in a Day’ program.

INTREN’s Executive Vice President, Matthew Turk, became a board member of Junior Achievement of Will County in 2010, prompting the company’s avid support of the organization and the lasting benefits of its teaching programs. In 2010, the company became an official sponsor of John R. Tibbott Elementary School through the program. In 2015, Lloyd Gillespie, INTREN Business Development Manager, joined Turk as a board member of Junior Achievement of Will County. This year, in partnership with volunteers from BMO, INTREN helped provide Junior Achievement curriculum to the entire elementary school and taught the graduating fifth grade class – an accomplishment consistent with the company’s steadfast commitment to serve as stewards of the community.

The forum consists of CFOs from the country's largest specialty contractor firms. This invitation only group allows CFOs to share extensive experience and knowledge, and foster an invaluable exchange of ideas. McArthy will use this forum to share best practices developed at INTREN and as a sounding board for cutting-edge financial ideas that can be implemented at INTREN.

In November 2015, McArthy was also awarded the 2015 Chicago CFO of the Year® Award in the Mid-Size Private Company Category, by the Financial Executives International (FEI) Chicago Chapter.
