As a charter supplier member of the Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (EUISSCA), we continue to measure our company’s carbon footprint and set reduction goals.

With our 2018 GHG Emissions Report now available, we are proud to report that even though our Greenhouse Gas Emissions grew in 2018 due to company growth and an increase in work hours, our emissions per work hour stabilized in four of six categories. This shows that our environmental initiatives are working, especially our recycling and grey water programs.

INTREN's Focus on the Field Video Series takes us to the Rock River in Rock Island, Illinois. The Emergency 69kV Transmission Project consisted of replacing a leaning tower in the river, as well as changing out an adjacent pole. The challenges the crew faced were transporting equipment despite strong river currents and high winds going upstream, as well as getting crews in the air with variable wind conditions. As in any project, safety was a crucial component. Watch INTREN's amazing linemen and equipment operators as they work diligently to rectify this emergency situation!

Over 400 INTREN crew members mobilized last week to Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian. Crews were staged and went through orientations in Lake City, Orlando, East Melbourne and Sumterville, Florida over the holiday weekend. Now with Dorian leaving the Bahamas behind and tracking toward the Palm Coast of Florida and upward into the Carolinas, crews have moved closer to the coastal areas.

As a result of Dorian’s shift in trajectory, additional crews have been called and will mobilize from Iowa and Missouri to assist our utility customer in North Carolina.

Mike McArthy, INTREN Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, has been selected as a finalist in the mid-size private category for the 2015 Chicago CFO of the Year® Award by the Financial Executives International (FEI) Chicago Chapter.

The Chicago CFO of the Year® Award honors senior financial leaders who have made significant contributions to a business or non-profit in Chicago with quality, insight and direction. Individuals are nominated and awarded in five categories: large public, mid-size public, large private, mid-size private, and not-for-profit. All candidate nominations are validated and endorsed by the nominee and nominee’s Chief Executive Officer.

Since joining INTREN in 2012, McArthy has assisted INTREN in navigating through an exponential period of fiscal and geographic growth to date, from $124MM in revenue in 2011 to $279M in revenue and more than 1,200 employees in 2015. McArthy leads Support Services at INTREN including Finance, Information Technology, Human Resources, Project Management Office, Fleet Services, and Procurement.

McArthy’s previous experience includes Vice President and Chief Financial Officer positions with family-owned and private-equity backed private companies, and divisional CFO roles for public companies. McArthy also has significant merger and acquisition experience.  Beginning his career as an auditor at Arthur Andersen & Co.  McArthy is a registered CPA with an MBA from Northern Illinois University and a BS in Operations Management from Illinois State University. He also has completed numerous executive programs at Northwestern University, University of Chicago and Harvard University.

Congratulations and cheers to Loretta on winning the Legacy Award at the Women's Business Development Center's (WBDC) 29th Annual Entrepreneurial Woman's Conference (EWC29). Loretta Rosenmayer, CEO and Founder of INTREN was bestowed the Hedy M. Ratner and S. Carol Dougal Legacy Award along with Shirley Marx, Chairman of the Board of New World Van Lines at the EWC29 evening reception and awards party.

The Legacy award is given to women entrepreneurs who have shown longtime commitment to the mission of the WBDC and who embody the visionary and entrepreneurial spirit of the WBDC's Co-Founders Hedy M. Ratner and S. Carol Dougal.

Loretta's joy and appreciation was evident as she walked on stage to accept the Legacy Award. With enthusiasm she hugged her friends and founders of the WBDC, Hedy and Carol, tightly to thank them for their support of women in business over the years and for their support of her endeavors as well. When asked about this award, Loretta Rosenmayer said, "I am truly humbled to receive this award from the (WBDC) and it means so much to me as a woman, business owner and business leader. I am honored to stand in the shadow to receive this award from two women who could've gone on to create their own business and probably earn millions of dollars; instead they chose to help all women."

On hand to watch and cheer Loretta on at WBDC's evening reception held at City Winery in Chicago were her daughters Amber Huber and Kim Cooper, daughters-in-law Holly Rosenmayer and Mandy Rosenmayer; honored guests Cheryl and Janelle Rabine, May Gowda, Mary Houpt, Keith Serles and Josh Maglasang; and from INTREN Teri Turner, Sue Clarke and Heidi Schmitt.

The mission of the WBDC is to provide services and programs that support and accelerate women’s business ownership and strengthen their impact on the economy. Since 1986, the WBDC has offered a full-service approach to assist prospective and established women business owners in the Chicago area.  The objectives of the WBDC are:

  • To accelerate the rate of growth of women’s business ownership
  • To increase the economic impact of women-owned businesses on both families and communities
  • To increase awareness of business ownership as a viable means of economic self-sufficiency
  • To stimulate public policy and system changes which support and strengthen the economic impact of women

Over the years, the WBDC has assisted more than 66,000 women in the greater Chicago area, helped establish 14 additional women’s business assistance centers in six states in the U.S., and continue to be credited for programs and policies that impact women’s economic development across the nation and globally.

Acts of courage surround us every day. Whether you are a mother or father, firefighter or policeman, all of us make sacrifices for the benefit and safety of others. These selfless acts of courage and devotion are what help make our communities thrive and safe. One such person making a difference in their community is Roddrick Harrison, a graduate of Loyola University College of Law in Chicago, Illinois who is a clerk for Civil District Court Judge Regina Woods and is a firefighter in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Roddrick is the son of Loretta Harrison, the owner of Loretta’s Authentic Pralines and good friend of INTREN Founder and CEO, Loretta Rosenmayer.  Years ago Rosenmayer, travelled to New Orleans, Louisiana where she met another vibrant Loretta - Loretta Harrison; both being of the entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirit, a true and lasting friendship was formed instantly. Loretta Harrison for the past 35 years has owned Loretta’s Authentic Pralines, a candy store in the heart of downtown New Orleans. Harrison was the first African American woman to successfully own and operate an individually owned praline store in New Orleans. Much like Rosenmayer, Harrison took a large step forward for the progress of business women, and continually gives back to those in need. Harrison lives by the belief that if you “put God first, he will grant you the wishes of your heart.”

Harrison has won numerous awards for her contributions to the economic success of New Orleans, service to her community, and her philanthropic spirit. Though Harrison’s awards are prestigious and plenty, it is her children that have grabbed hold and perpetuated her charitable spirit. Her one son, Roddrick Harrison, understands the sense of community and keeping the community of New Orleans safe. Roddrick graduated last summer from Loyola University College of Law, and works as a clerk for Civil District Court Judge Regina Woods. But what is most impressive about this young man is his vigilance and devotion to his community.

The firefighter/lawyer on a Saturday night in early May was on his way to his mother’s business when he caught sight of a house on fire. After Roddrick called the fire department, he ran in to the smoke-filled, burning house to alert the residents to the fire. Once the residents were safely away from the house, Roddrick apologized for waking them, to which the woman’s mother replied, “You don’t have to apologize. I’m glad you did what you did.” After safely escorting the couple out of the burning home, Roddrick helped connect hoses for the fire department and extinguish the flames that took more than a half hour to get under control. When asked whether a 28-year-old, lifesaving, firefighting lawyer could be considered ambitious, Harrison had a one-word answer: “Absolutely.”

This is just one story of the many stories across the nation about brave men and women who risk their lives and give everything to make their communities safer and better places. Bringing Stewardship to the Construction Industry is how we live each day at INTREN; it is also how we care for our communities and people, whether in our backyard or in rural Haiti.  Throughout August, employees of INTREN took individual stewardship to a new level by promoting and raising money for the communities of Haiti through the Haiti Outreach Organization.  Thanks to their generous and giving spirit, INTREN employees successfully raised enough money to build a new well and to teach a community how to care for it through Haiti Outreach’s Adopt-A-Well Program!   

INTREN CEO and Founder, Loretta Rosenmayer, an avid supporter of Haiti Outreach, wanted to encourage others to be aware of the need for clean, sustainable water in many communities of Haiti. Haiti Outreach is a non-profit organization that provides a hand-up not a hand-out that requires community participation and responsibility on public projects that benefit the whole community.

“INTREN believes in actively participating in sustaining our communities,” said Matthew Turk, INTREN Executive Vice President. “We wanted to share with our employees and their families the experience of being able to help other communities to learn and help themselves.  Through our giving campaign we were able to make an impact and raise awareness, too.”

Almost 100 INTREN employees and family members donated over $10,000 to provide sustainable access to clean water and sanitation projects to the rural communities of Haiti, and Loretta and INTREN matched the donations!  One well alone costs $15,000.   Anyone who donated over $60 was eligible to win a chance to accompany INTREN’s President, Lance Rosenmayer, to the inauguration and celebration of the well’s opening in Haiti.

Continuing a culture of uncompromising safety, on August 1st, 2015, INTREN rolled out a new on-site job brief for all INTREN crews to complete prior to starting work on a job site. The job brief revision was led by Senior Vice President of Operations, Rob Wiggs and Director of Safety & Quality. This new job brief document will create more discussion and will allow crew members to communicate, identify and share potential risk factors with more ease and clarity.

To produce the new job brief, the Safety Department piloted a test group of 20 INTREN crews from across the country who were asked to evaluate the new form and provide feedback.  These crews were then asked to gauge the effectiveness of the new brief in use as far as it communicated and identified potential risks factors. Once finalized, the Safety Department implemented a program through the month of July where all INTREN field and office employees were shown how to use and incorporate the new brief into job site preparations.

“We’ve had a job brief for some time, but based on feedback from the field and our interest in continuous growth, we felt it could be improved,” said Tim Ayers, Director of Safety & Quality.  “Our employees helped us build a better tool. We coupled changes to the tool with a training program that touched every employee. The new tool is less focused on checking the box and more dedicated to spelling out the action we will take to address our risks.”

INTREN shared the new job brief with their clients such as ComEd and PG&E, as well as fellow contractors. By sharing the new job brief and best practices, INTREN hopes to continually develop new procedures in the field keeping all crew members safe on their job sites. Improving safety is just one way INTREN is ‘Outperforming. Everyday.’

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its preliminary monthly report for July, 2015. According to the report, the number of individuals employed in the utilities sector rose from 561,900 to 564,500 from June, 2015 to July, 2015. Even more encouraging, from April, 2015 to July, 2015 this sector has added more than 4,000 jobs, 560,500 – 564,500. Year to date, the utility sector has seen a large increase as the industry has added more than 11,600 jobs over the past 12 months.

The unemployment rate within the sector has dropped .9% from June to July and over 2.1% since April. Since July of 2013, the unemployment rate within the utility sector has decreased from 5.3% to 1.5%. The sector has seen a 3.8% decrease over the past two years.

Ideas to help save you time and enjoy your workday

Is the work we do on a daily basis something to be endured or to be celebrated?  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, non-farm business productivity decreased in the first quarter of 2015; and it’s easy to understand as we often lose sight of our progress when our daily schedules are jam packed.  But progress is better than perfection, so celebrate the fact that you are moving in the right direction. 

Use lunch out for fresh air – a brisk, five-minute walk will clear your mind and get the blood flowing.  You’ll return to your office refreshed and rejuvenated.

Embrace “to-do” lists – When you arrive at work for the day, jot down tasks in the order you hope to accomplish them.  This simple task creates a real sense of accomplishment and help to lessen anxiety.

Set long-term goals – Post them next to your computer so you can frequently remind yourself of your goals.

Arrive early – Enjoy the quiet peaceful setting of an empty office.  With fewer distractions, you have the ability to clearly focus on the opportunities ahead for your day.

Focus on one task – Multitasking is overrated.  Your brain performs better when you only focus on one thing at a time.  Easier said than done, but whenever possible, it’s a tip worth trying.

Stay hydrated – Caffeine content actually dehydrates you more and provides only a short burst of energy.  Switch to a refreshing bottle of water to replace your afternoon coffee break.

Practice “Active Optimism” – In the book "Stronger: Develop the Resilience You Need to Succeed," author George S. Everly Jr. and his co-authors drew on interviews with Navy SEALs and discovered that many of them shared the trait of "active optimism." This quality of confidence, which allows you to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed and reach your goals, helps overcome toxic thoughts to maintain a positive attitude, even when faced with difficult circumstances.

This June, INTREN began working with the Northern Indiana Public Service Company NIPSCO, to complete a URD cable replacement project in St. John, Indiana, bringing 8 years programmatic cable replacement experience on ComEd’s system to this contract. This is INTREN’s first project of a multi-year contract with NIPSCO and represents one piece of a much larger, 7-year infrastructure improvement project in Indiana, called Transmission Distribution Storage Improvement Charge (TDSIC). The improvement plan is scheduled to run through 2022 and will provide NIPSCO customers with a more reliable electrical system. 

This first project - Circuit 12-779-St. John Indiana, is the installation of 22,000 feet of underground cable in conduit to replace older buried cable. The scope of the project includes new equipment sets, livening cable and making the installation electrically complete; and is a collaborative effort between INTREN, NIPSCO, and Primera Engineering.

While INTREN’s relationship with NIPSCO began years ago, project lead and Business Development Manager, James Althoff, states it was a team effort in order to secure INTREN’s first project with NIPSCO. “It was a collaboration with Business Development, Operations, but also with support from our executive team,” said Althoff. “Matthew Turk, Rob Wiggs, Harry Laski, Matt Sherry, and Victor Moreno placed INTREN in a position to discuss opportunities with NIPSCO. It was through the alignment of our core values and performance that will continue to make this a great partnership.”

NIPSCO, headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana, is one of the seven energy distribution companies of NiSource. With more than 821,000 natural gas customers and 468,000 electric customers across the northern third of Indiana, NIPSCO is the largest natural gas distribution company, and the second largest electric distribution company, in Indiana. NiSource distribution companies serve 3.8 million natural gas and electric customers primarily in seven states.

“In early June, Peoples Gas approached INTREN with a unique situation,” said Doug Anderson, Account Manager, Gas,  “they (Peoples) needed our help to inspect a critical 36” gas main that is installed in a tunnel 60’ deep running below a major expressway. As part of their maintenance program, an operator would inspect the pipe periodically to ensure its reliability and safety.  What made the situation unique is crews had to maintain pressure around the pipe during inspections, as the tunnel and shafts are typically filled with about 200,000 gallons of water.” 

Initially INTREN was tasked to remove the water and place it in storage tanks to be treated before it could be properly disposed. INTREN’s Gas crews then worked with Peoples Gas to assist in the inspection of the gas mains in the tunnel. During inspections, Peoples Gas identified a number of repair issues that they could not make themselves. INTREN provided qualified and certified employees to enter the tunnel to make the necessary repairs for Peoples Gas. 

To prepare for the project, INTREN’s Gas Division worked with INTREN’s Safety Department to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and ensure the employees’ safety as this work requires special OSHA training and certification for confined spaces.  The Gas Division also coordinated with the City of Chicago for special permits to conduct the work.

On a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, August 15th, Nate Stevens, Project Manager and Alex Lucio, General Foreman, in our New Berlin office went OVER THE EDGE literally!!!  Along with many other brave souls, Nate and Alex repelled down the 125’ wall of Lambeau Field to raise money for Special Olympics of Southern Wisconsin.  Watched by their family, friends and a few of our clients, both men had a great time and said they can’t wait to do it again next year!

Congratulations to Nate and Alex on safely going Over The Edge for Special Olympics and for raising a combined total of $3,800 in just a couple weeks!  Great Job!!

INTREN continued its commitment to strengthening the company’s gas utility division as the specialty contractor attended the Midwest Energy Association’s (MEA) 92nd Annual Gas Operations Technical & Leadership Summit in Rochester, Minnesota, August 11 – 13, 2015.

This year’s MEA Gas Summit drew a crowd of over 600 industry professionals, from front-line personnel to managing directors. INTREN Business Development Manager Lloyd Gillespie & Account Manager Doug Anderson seized the opportunity to meet with attendees and presented the gas utility group’s successful infrastructure projects and accomplishments.

INTREN sat down with a Midwest Utilities Business Development Manager to discuss how the two contractors could work together to secure a partnership for upcoming projects. INTREN is currently investigating Midwest Utilities’ boring division and how they could use the contractor for boring initiatives instead of renting equipment. The two contractors also discussed INTREN’s inclusion regarding work with Ameren Corporation and Midwest Utilities in St. Louis, Missouri.

This year, INTREN took part in the Olympic Games by donating a Go-Pro camera as the one of the many prizes for this year’s competition. As INTREN has done for the past couple of years, the INTREN booth provided additional fun with the bean-bag toss game. For the first time, INTREN provided the winner of the bean-bag tournament with their very own INTREN bean-bag boards.
